About Malusky

Malusky Kennels have been involved with sled dogs and Sled Dog Racing since 1995. We began with one Alaskan Malamute, and grew to support the whole families interest in the sport. Currently we have 15 Siberian Huskies, 5 Alaskan Huskies and One Alaskan Malamute.

Donal competes in the 6 Dog Class at races around Australia.

Anne competes in the 4 Dog Class and sometimes also enters the 2 Dog Class at races. This year Anne will compete in 6 Dog Class at some events.

Jaime competes in the 2 Dog Class and may also enter the Veterans Class with more mature dogs.

We are also working to implement an 8 Dog Class to the sport, a class in which Donal will be competing.

Malusky Team are founding members of the Hunter Valley Mushers. Hunter Valley Mushers is a group of mushing enthusiasts who have been organizing their own successful sled dog race here in July each year since 2002.

Malusky Kennel and dogs have been involved in 2 canine research studies performed by the University of Armidale.

We are hosting the first Mushing Boot Camp to be held in Australia in May 2007. Professional Mushing trainers Ann Stead and Jamie Nelson from the United States have been invited to teach and have consented to be the instructors. Their expertise and knowledge will be gratefully received by those attending the camp. See their web site at www.mushingbootcamp.com  .

Our recent trip overseas gave us a lot more insight into the sport and we hope to encourage more participation in Australia. We visited the Cairngorm Sled Dog Adventure Centre in Scotland where they have sled dog rides, for a fee, to the public. Every participant enjoyed themselves immensely.

We observed a distance sled dog race, the Finnmarksløpet, in Norway and were amazed by the dogs and mushers. We also joined a week long expedition, running a team of dogs each, across the top of Norway above the Arctic Circle, finishing 280km later in Sweden. It was awesome and we learned a lot more about our dogs and training methods.

Before our expedition overseas we thought that we should be able to provide the sled dog rides here. After what we saw and experienced overseas, we were confident we would be able to offer the only sled dog rides available in Australia. So after much research, planning, importation of specifically designed cart for sled dog rides and a lot of set up work, we are now operational.
